Annual event returns for two-day festival in Uptown Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Organizers for the annual Charlotte Pride have announced 2013 festivities will be held August 24-25, 2013 in Uptown Charlotte, the culmination of a week-long slate of events highlighting the social, cultural, ethnic, artistic and political diversity of the Charlotte-Metro area’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. The announcement of this year’s dates comes after last year’s wildly successful event, which drew more than 45,000 people to Uptown just one week before the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
“We are building upon our astounding successes after our phenomenal year of public growth and recognition at our two-day festival last year,” said Richard Grimstad, Charlotte Pride co-director. “There can be no doubt that our community is making visible progress and change. Our festival is the largest LGBT Pride event between Atlanta and Washington, D.C. We are proud to call Charlotte home and proud the city has embraced its LGBT community with such fervor and acceptance.”
This year’s Charlotte Pride Festival is being presented by the independent Charlotte Pride whose organizing committee is formed from the core group of volunteers who presented successful Pride festivities in partnership with the LGBT Community Center of Charlotte from 2006-2012. After raising nearly $100,000 for the Center, Charlotte Pride organizers are excited to extend their support to a wider array of community organizations. A new community grants program to assist local organizations’ programming and projects will be funded by proceeds from each year’s festival. Details for the new grants program will be announced later this year.
Charlotte Pride will announce its annual theme at an upcoming community event. Details of the public fundraising and celebration event kicking off this year’s series of Charlotte Pride activities will be announced in February.
