Charlotte Pride to host historic Pride parade this August

Charlotte Pride to host first Pride parade in Queen City since 1994

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the first time since 1994, the Queen City will play host to a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community Pride parade. The parade, organized by Charlotte Pride, is slated for Sunday, August, 25, 2013, as part of Charlotte Pride’s two-day annual festival in Uptown. Entries are currently being accepted for parade floats, walking contingents, vehicles and other entries. For more information or to apply for a parade entry, visit charlottepride.org/parade.

“This historic parade will bring awareness and education about the LGBTQ community to Charlotte like never before,” said Dave Webb, Charlotte Pride Parade chair. “LGBTQ community members and their straight allies will walk the streets of Uptown with Pride and in commemoration of our struggle for acceptance, respect, dignity and equality.”

The Pride parade has been an LGBTQ community tradition since 1970, when community members in New York City marched to mark the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in June 1969. The Riots launched the modern movement for LGBTQ equality.

“The LGBTQ community in Charlotte is stronger now than ever before,” said Richard Grimstad, Charlotte Pride co-director. “Our annual Charlotte Pride events have grown tremendously over the past several years; they are a testament to this community’s strength and diversity.”

Charlotte Pride is slated for Aug. 24-25, 2013, in Uptown Charlotte. It is the culmination of a week-long slate of events highlighting the social, cultural, ethnic, artistic and civic diversity of the Charlotte-Metro area’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) communities. Last year’s event drew more than 45,000 people to Uptown just one week before the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
