Transgender Day of Visibility is on March 31, 2016. Charlotte Pride celebrates this special day with our transgender family members, friends and neighbors.

Leaders of Charlotte Pride’s transgender community collaborative released the following statement to mark Transgender Day of Visibility:

“Transgender men and women serve in all walks of life. We are your doctors and nurses. We are your therapist or psychiatrist. We are engineers and technicians. We are artists and critics. We own and operate businesses, are employees, and you will find us in just about any job or occupation there is. Over 300,000 of us are veterans, and there are more than 5,000 U.S. service members who proudly serve our country and who identify as transgender, with a number of them serving openly. We are who we say we are. All we ask is that you recognize us as humans who deserve respect, dignity and honor.”

Charlotte Pride encourages community members to celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility with us and join us for a special mixer and night of entertainment, food and dancing on Saturday, April 2, 2016, 7-10 p.m., at the Charlotte Pride offices, 1900 The Plaza. Admission is free and refreshments will be served as DJ Lil Betty spins the latest tunes. To learn more and to RSVP, visit charlottepride.org/trans/.

In Charlotte, the Transgender Day of Visibility will also be marked on March 31 by Wells Fargo’s Duke Energy Center, which will light its Uptown Charlotte building in the traditional pink, blue and white colors of the transgender flag.

The International Transgender Day of Visibility was founded by Michigan transgender activist Rachel Crandall in 2009 as an opportunity to celebrate the lives and contributions of transgender people. This year’s theme for the holiday is “More Than Visibility,” a clear call not only for recognition of transgender people’s lives but also for equal rights and dignity in society and law.
