Local LGBTQ and ally heroes to be honored at Charlotte Pride


Organization announces annual Champions of Pride Award recipients to be honored at Bank of America Charlotte Pride Parade and on Wells Fargo Stage on Aug. 16

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Pride, which will produce the annual Charlotte Pride Festival & Bank of America Charlotte Pride Parade Aug. 15-16, announced today its annual Charlotte Pride Champions of Pride Awards recipients for 2015, to be honored on Aug. 16 on the Wells Fargo Stage at the PNC Bank Festival Zone in Uptown Charlotte. Passes to the Charlotte Pride VIP Experience, presented by Time Warner Cable, are also now on sale at charlottepride.org/vip/.

The Champions of Pride Awards seek to recognize those whose work and dedication exemplify the spirit of Pride. Our Champions endeavor to empower and unite LGBTQ and allied people through their leadership, service and support. Champions understand the importance of celebrating our past, present and future while advancing LGBTQ rights and visibility.

This year’s award recipients include:
• Harvey Milk Award — Joshua Buford — Given for his significant contributions to community conversations, priorities, leadership, culture and history, and in recognition of his work with the new LGBTQ Community Archive of Charlotte.

Outstanding Ally Award — The Hon. John Autry, Charlotte City Council, District 5 — Given in recognition of his steadfast support of fully inclusive LGBTQ non-discrimination ordinances considered by Charlotte City Council in March 2015.
Young Catalyst Award — Gabby Hubert — Given in recognition of her outstanding work on LGBTQ education and awareness as a rising junior at Parkwood High School in Monroe, N.C.

In addition to these awards, Charlotte Pride will also present their new Stonewall Awards, given in recognition of those who have a long-demonstrated commitment to Pride in Charlotte, on Aug. 16.
