‘Something New’ wins Best Short at Tenth Annual Reel Out Charlotte
The Tenth Annual Reel Out Charlotte, the Queen City’s LGBTQ Film Festival, was held May 16-20, at Camp North End. With hundreds of attendees over the weekend, the anniversary event was a resounding success.
A full capacity audience attended the festival’s annual Shorts Showcase, a free community event in which some of the best, recent LGBTQ short films are presented each year. Audience members are invited to vote in each year’s Best Short – Viewers’ Choice Award.
“Something New” was the clear audience favorite and was named the 2018 Best Short – Viewers’ Choice.
The 2017 short film is written by and stars Ben Baur, along with co-stars Kasey Mahaffy, Johnny Sibilly, Doug Locke, Zach Zagoria and Ruby Hanger. The film is directed by TJ Marchbank. Baur and Marchbank are executive producers, with Susan McBeth as associate producer.
Baur, who appeared at the festival for an encore community showing and audience Q&A, has described the film as a romantic comedy that depicts how “love doesn’t have to look like anything.”
The film was recently released this week following Reel Out Charlotte for viewing online. You can watch it here.
